According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Hawaii saw the volume of air arrivals increase by 2.9% in December 2018, growing from 868,100 arrivals in December 2017 to 893,369 arrivals in December 2018. Air arrivals from the USA grew by 6.7%, from 553,349 in December 2017 to 590,499 in December 2018, grew by 4.7% from Japan (to 131,099 air arrivals). Air arrivals fell by 2.2% from Canada (to 68,382 air arrivals). Tourist spending in December fell by 3.6% to $1.600 billion.
In calendar year 2018 Hawaii saw a 5.9% increase in the volume of air arrivals, growing from 9,277,613 arrivals in 2017 to 9,827,132 air arrivals in 2018. Air arrivals from the USA increased by 9.0% in 2018, growing from 5,842,568 air arrivals in 2017 to 6,368,851 air arrivals in calendar year 2018 but fell 1.0% from Japan (to 1,571,298 air arrivals). They grew by 2.7% from Canada (to 533,879 air arrivals). Total tourist spending by air visitors increased by 6.9% in 2018, growing from $16.64 billion in 2017 to $17.78 billion in 2018. Average spend per visitor per day grew by 1.4%, from $199.20 per day in 2017 to $202.00 in 2018, while average spend per person per trip increased by 0.9%, from $1,793.30 in 2017 to $1,809.10 in 2018. In 2018 32.9% of Hawaii’s tourists were visiting for the first time with 67.1% having visited the state before.
